When popular local artist Gonzo247 posted a photo of his recent St Arnold’s project in-progress on Facebook this week it peaked our interest and asked him a few questions about it:

When were you first approached by St Arnold’s for the mural artwork near the tasting room?

Brock Wagner, Founder of Saint Arnold Brewing Company, approached me over a year ago for the mural artwork near the tasting room. He wanted to bring more art into the building; he’s a huge patron of the arts. They had an existing design they liked in mind and it translated well into a urban style of artwork.

The Santos Tower (as we're calling it) at the St Arnold's Brewery

What did St Arnold’s ask you to do?

They asked me to install artwork on an interior wall of their space near the entrance of the brewery. They wanted my version of what I would do with the design, but in spray paint.

Did you sketch it out first or did you just go at it when you saw the space?

I did an initial sketch with pen and paper to show them an idea of what I visualized for the wall.

What are you working on right now with them (like the recent Santos piece)?

Right now I’m working on painting the Silos outside of the brewery.

What do you think about the visibility of your Santos art?

I think it’s awesome because the design of the SANTO is by artist, Carlos Hernandez, it showcases Saint Arnold Brewery and gives me an opportunity to share my skills and passion for spray-paint based art. Again, they love the look of my urban styled art install. I’m honored to be showcasing a dope design and Saint Arnold Brewery. It’s great for everyone involved –A win, win for all.

When will it be done?

Santo Skull will be done today. The second Silo should be done by the end of next week.

Does spray painting on that kind of metal surface change the way you have to work?

Luckily for me I’ve worked on a variety of surfaces at a variety of heights so with this experience it makes it a little easier to plan for. However working on corrugated metal for anyone is still always a challenge regardless. You have to plan for the ripples and plan for the surface not being flat or straight.

Do you need to put some type of sealant on it to ensure it lasts for many years to come?

You could but the spray paint I use is pretty high quality and meant to withstand outdoor elements. It is usually the Client’s decision whether they would like to add the extra protection.

Do you drink St Arnold’s beer?

Of course!

What’s your favorite? And the same for Wifey247… What does she like?

Picking out your favorite Saint Arnold’s beer is like picking out your favorite child; even though you have one you don’t really tell anyone..haha. I do tend to drink the seasonal beers more often though since they’re only available a certain amount of time during the year. Wifey247 likes the Elissa IPA

These bars all have their own unique charms, busy happenings or quite corners and they’re all worth visiting every now and then or all the time. You decide for yourself, but here’s my latest nightlife run-down.

Food Truck & Craft Beer Haven

Liberty Station on Washington Avenue is just a cool place with a great urban vibe that embraced an old filling station and graced it with craft beers, a slightly worn yet trendy warehouse look with the rough walls, a fantastic looking bar that’s made out of wood that could probably be used for skate boards and a random arrangement of $1 notes stuck to the ceiling above the wall – a contribution by one of the past bartenders who supposedly could throw a dollar bill up with a nail and get them to stick… Whatever the truth is on that, the bills serve as and equally random, and rather good conversation piece!

While cars might not pull up these days to fill up on gas, some of Houston’s best food trucks do. Here’s a list of the current line up:

Sunday & Wednesday: Happy Endings
Monday: Coronas
Tuesday: Lady Bird
Thursday: H Town StrEats
Friday: Family Bites
Saturday: The Modular

Pop in around 5pm to 10pm and you’re more than likely going to have some great food. Meet up at the Station with friends too! The more the merrier and the patio in front is a great place to hang out

Bottom’s Up

Warren’s Inn is tucked away on Travis Street across from Market Square downtown. This bar has been a downtown drinking staple for more years than you can imagine but used to be located in a different spot nearby, the owner Carolyn told me. She has many stories.. So many, you may never hear the same one twice.

When you’re wrapping up the night, or have had a bad or week, Warren’s is the place to go! The drink are poured heavy – just what one needs to make things better!

Hanging around, chances are you’re gonna hear about someone else’s bad day or week and if you’re lucky enough you’re going to hear about somebody’s great day or week. But the nice thing is, you’re gonna leave all the bad behind so get over the fact that this is a dive bar and used to be a titty bar back in the day, which for some wish it still was!

Friday Night Dance

Big Top on Main Street near HCC Midtown is slightly psychedelic with everything inside cast in dark shadows by red lights and long lines of christmas lights strung between casual beer drinkers and the ceiling.

This is a place to come to visit and listen to music by local acts like 50’s record playing DJ group A Fist Full of Soul, a regular every third Friday of the Month. Things get a little cramped when people start dancing (and dancing really well at that!) but it’s superb fun to join in or stand aside and watch.

Soul is playing at Big Top this Friday… So find whatever 50’s style clothing you have and come by this retro party!

For the Weekend Date or a Secluded Hideaway

La Carafe is Houston’s oldest commercial building that, like Warren’s Inn, is across from Market Square downtown. It’s also owned by the same person as Warren’s Inn, Carolyn, who considers herself more of a Stewart of La Carafe than an owner.

If you like the feeling of old European bars then you’ll really love this place. It’s dimly lit, has accent lighting by candle sticks that look as if the wax has been collecting since the building’s construction back in 18-something.

La Carafe is spooky, haunted and the creepy kid from Sixth Sense would likely have plenty of dead ghosts to talk to. This all creates the perfect reason for nudging a little closer to your date (though you should be doing that anyways)! And then there’s the view of downtown Houston on the upstairs porch… A stunning view at night!

If you don’t know anything about wine then you’re okay here too. The bar tenders are amazing. All of them. They know their wines and can help navigate you to a perfect choice.

If you love and know wine… Then you’ve probably been here plenty of times before reading this!

Get There By Bike

Grand Prize is one of the largest sellers of Lone Star beer in Houston, a Lone Star / PBR sales rep told me back in December. I like Lone Star Beer and I like Grand Prize Bar. A lot.

On the way in you’ll find the packed bike rack and on the inside you’ll find lot’s of places to sit with groups of friends.

Here you can drink more than Lone Star, they have a select list of cocktails including a cucumber one I warily tried at the behest of a friend – and really enjoyed it! Beyond the drinks though, the menu is very good, crafted by The Modular food trailer chef Josh Martinez, and has choices like burgers and onion rings – and I’d come just for the onion rings alone!

This place is a little outside of the ones that I’ve mentioned above being in the Museum/Montrose/Rice University area, but you happen to be lucky enough to be in the quint area – be sure to stop in! And if you live near by I’m sure you’re already there!

Check these great nightlife spots out. There is no shortage of places to visit in Houston and there’s never a reason to stay home bored!

A few weeks ago I wrote that the moment you walk into the Dynamo’s new home, the BBVA Compass Stadium, is a dream come true for the team and thousands of Dynamo fans. On May 5th that dream came to life as over 22 thousand fans came for the inaugural game, Dynamo v DC United.

The Washington Post’s soccer writer Steven Goff reported that inside DC United’s locker a message was tapped onto a pillar that read, “Let’s Spoil This Party!”

Well, that didn’t happen. The Party started with tailgating in the Minute Maid Park lots in front of the Compass and live music on “Avenue Orange” beside Lucky’s Pub. When the doors opened up fans were able to walk inside – and for most it was the first time inside.

I heard people throughout the game saying: “Wow!”, “Oh that’s beautiful”, “Finally! This is great!” and so on. Being right in the mix of downtown, the GRB Convention Centre, the Astro’s stadium Minute Maid Park and the Rocket’s Toyota Centre is all a true testament to the maturity of the Dynamo in Houston. They’re here to stay.

The awe of the stadium became far more subtle when the players emerged onto the field and when the game started after the inaugural ceremony finished up, well, the soccer madness began!

A full house of 22 thousand fans cheered “Go Dynamo Go!” Supporters matched the bright orange seats with their team jerseys on, bright orange hats and the mood was perfect with their exceedingly bright confidence in the team.

But could you imagine if the Dynamo lost their inaugural match? Apparently the team themselves could’t bringing no less than 20 shots on goal. DC United’s Bill Hamid did well saving 9 of the shots that could have scored.

Yet one quick shot by Brad Davis got through and won the game.

In an article on the DC United blog Brad shared his thoughts on the goal:

“I got a ball from Andrew [Hainault] and turned. Usually, my option is to go out to
Jermaine [Taylor] if I get closed down. I’ve been striking the ball well during training this past week so I decided to give it a chance and let it fly. When I did, I saw where it was going and knew he was going to get a touch. I just hoped he wouldn’t get enough. I saw it go in and went over to the Supporters’ section to let them enjoy the moment with us as well.”

And on scoring:

“Pure joy. Those moments are tough to put into words. To be here and to have that happen is pretty special. It is a day that I will never forget. It’s a moment I will never forget and one our fans will never forget.”

He’s right too. Fans will never forget the day the Houston Dynamo’s claimed their rightful place as a major sporting team in Houston. The day they won their dream and gave Houston their dream too.

I recently had the opportunity to talk with the new Executive Director of the EaDo Management District, Anton Sinkewich, and as a few questions about his background, his new position with the district and the future of EaDo.

There are a total of 27 management districts throughout the City of Houston including Downtown Houston, the Greater East End, Midtown and, of course, EaDo. According to the City of Houston’s website management districts are special districts created by the Texas legislature. These districts are empowered to promote, develop, encourage and maintain employment, commerce, transportation, housing, tourism, recreation, arts, entertainment, economic development, safety and the public welfare.

The EaDo District

Management Districts are given the power to finance their operations by issuing bonds or other obligations, payable in whole or in part from ad valorem taxes, assessments, impact fees, or other funds of the District to provide improvements and services. They may not levy a tax or assessment on single-family detached residences. Furthermore, districts may levy a tax only after holding an election within the district. These districts are intended to supplement, not supplant, existing public services.

As we sat in the local EaDo Vietnamese restaurant Huynh, it became clear to me what an utterly massive job Anton has taken on. The EaDo district is among the smallest management districts, if not just in size then certainly in terms of budget. Districts such as Downtown Houston have budgets of millions of dollars while EaDo has “less than half a million dollars and about half of the budget goes towards maintaining the easements and clearing up trash throughout the district.”

We also talked about the city park situation in EaDo – or lack thereof. The Sister Cities Promenade is slated to become a type of extension to the convention center / entertainment district and not really any kind of park per se. Walk your dogs anywhere around EaDo and you’ll quickly find out that there’s an increasing number of people out walking their pets. Flash forward another 5 or 10 years, an increased amount of residential homes in the district and you’ll likely see people walking their pets and a stroller too!

“I certainly agree that we need a park – and a park that’s separate from the promenade. But we should start by making usable space out of the city easement and clear it out for festival use…” Even if it’s just a grassy area where hay stacks can be thrown down on the sides for people to sit on. “I’ve sent in a request to the City of Houston for permission to make use of the easement.”

Anton Sinkewich at Huynh's Restaurant in EaDo

Are you from Houston? Can you say a little about your background?

“I’m not from Houston, but it certainly has become my adopted home.

“I was born & grew up in Cleveland, OH, and went to undergrad at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where I received a BFA in Print Media & Sculpture. After graduating I moved about, and lived in numerous places nationally and internationally before landing in New York City, where I lived for 5 years. During this time my focus had clearly shifted from traditional art practices to community building, urbanism, and the built environment of cities.

“I moved to Houston in 2002 to pursue a graduate degree from the Rice University School of Architecture, and I suppose you can say that during the years I was here for grad school, I got hooked – Houston is a fascinating city in that there are so many great offerings, and it is changing so rapidly.”

You mentioned that you have worked for the Downtown District. What did your job consist of?

“My job title at Central Houston Inc, and the Downtown District was Planning & Urban Design Coordinator. I was very involved in long range planning for Downtown and the urban core, as well as project management, and community/stakeholder coordination for numerous design & construction initiatives. These initiatives involved Metro Rail, street-scape improvements, parks, etc… all of which have had, and will continue to have a positive transformative effect on the inner city. I was also responsible for most of the graphic production in the office, such as mapping and proposal drawings.”

Why did you apply to become the EaDo director?

“EaDo is one of the most interesting parts of the city right now. It is so economically and culturally diverse, and is ideally positioned to continue developing as one of the nation’s great urban neighborhoods. When I first moved to Houston I loved riding around EaDo and the East End because it had the same feel as many of the northeastern & great lakes cities where I grew up & spent my formative years – such as Cleveland, Brooklyn, Chicago, where post industrial warehouse landscapes were changing into eclectic & fun neighborhoods.

“In the time that I’ve been in Houston; 10 years now, so much has happened in EaDo and it is really going in a great direction. In addition, I’m a resident in the East End and I consider EaDo part of my community.”

The opening of the Dynamo Stadium has been seen by many as a sign of increasing potential for EaDo

How do you think EaDo will change over the next 5 to 10 years?

“We are going to see the area continue to densify with more housing, businesses, and hotels, as well as Improved parks & public spaces. EaDo is already becoming a gateway neighborhood between Downtown and the historic East End and Third Ward neighborhoods, and the grid of small blocks & streets along with improved public transportation is a perfect armature on which to grow an incredible pedestrian friendly urban environment. There is already an established sense of community with many of the residents and businesses, and all that is just going to continue to grow as more and more jump into the mix.”

Is that based on your vision or based on experience?

“Both. And both are accurate. Just watch…”

What parts of EaDo do you think retail will start developing?

“The easiest way to answer that is to have a look at where it is already appearing… retail does best when it is clustered with other retail – that’s when places become successful and start to feel really good. You can see this happening already with Saint Emanuel.

“The Leeland, Polk, & Pease corridors seem like naturals for neighborhood services as more and more housing fills in, such as our cool new hardware store or digital services shop. It perhaps seems like such a small thing now, but it is important for residents to patronize their neighborhood businesses- its simple logic; when the pioneer businesses do very well, more will follow.”

What are some common questions prospecting business owners are asking you about the district?

“They are interested in the amounts of housing in the area, the BBVA Compass Stadium, and other initiatives they’ve heard about coming: such as the Metro Light Rail and the Sister Cities International Promenade. All these things are in various stages of development and have the potential to coalesce into a great mix of steady neighborhood support from the residential base, in addition to the occasional business surge and visibility due to area events.”

What level of interest have you seen from developers and entrepreneurs about EaDo?

“Its a very high level of interest – and its no surprise with everything that is going on, along with all the potential the area holds.”

The First East End Street fest on Cinco de Mayo had the sound of children playing, meat sizzling to go on tacos, live music by local performers including the renowned singer Norma Zenteno and dozens of stalls for local businesses, community organizations and artists. The festival was as much about a good time as it was to help raise awareness about the vast revitalization of the East End. In late 2014 the Metro Rail line that runs along on Harrisburg Boulevard is set to open.

Renowned singer Norma Zenteno headlined the event. (Photo Credit: Barrio Dogs Inc.)

The President of the Greater East End District, Diane Schenke, spoke with EaDo Life in a recent interview about the extensive work being done in the area. “When we saw the plans for the rail line we decided to coordinate our efforts with the residents and make street beautification improvements along Harrisburg Blvd while the rail line is being constructed.”

The revitalization is an incentive for developers to build along Harrisburg Blvd – developers such as Julio del Carpio with the Delca Design Group. Julio intends to develop five blocks along Harrisburg Blvd called Paseo de las Americas using Mediterranean architecture and create a setting that is inspired, also, by the downtown San Antonio River Walk. Julio had a stall set up with maps of the area and his planned community.

Members from the communities such as Eastwood, Lawndale were there and were eager to let people know about their historic neighbourhoods. Gloria Zento and a dozen volunteers represented Barrio Dogs, a Houston charity that aims to educate people about dog abuse and to prevent it through education programs targeting youth and local communities.

Food was provided by food trucks including Monterrey Taqueria Mobile, Lady Bird, Firehouse Tacos and others. Margaritas were everywhere made by Party 4 U’s Yolanda Apodaca-Gonzales. “I started out 5 years ago with 1 margarita machine and now we’ve expanded to 32 thanks to great events like this!”

Other local businesses participated too such as the Wallis State Bank and Jaime A Garcia State Farm Associate, who had his entire family out to the event.

The festival was a fun day out went on through to the night with music and dancing, and kids weren’t left out with Pony rides available and more

Scores came out to attend with over 5000 people with 30 teams participating in the 12th Annual Houston Dragon Boat Race, including several year round teams, from leisure teams all the way to professional traveling teams competing. The Texas Dragon Boat Association hosted the dragon boating festivals during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, featuring cultural performances, food, and artisans.

Every 12 minutes Dragon boats were flying through the water in the Buffalo Bayou as the teams competed against each other the 500 meter races.

Starting in 2001 the Houston Chinese American Lions Club held the first Houston Dragon Boat Festival with eight teams competing and the second Houston Dragon Boat Festival in May 2002 with twelve teams. In 2003, the Texas Dragon Boat Association incorporated as a Texas non-profit to promote the tradition of dragon boating, increase awareness of Asian and Asian-American culture, and enhance cross-cultural understanding.

Houston Dragon Boat Festival 2003 welcomed an estimated three thousand Houstonians, representing a myriad of cultural backgrounds, including twenty different Asian countries. Each year since then we have had a successful Festival in May on the historical Buffalo Bayou.

The Texas Dragon Boat Association possesses a fleet of eight boats, and plans are underway to build two boathouses (one in the East End on Buffalo Bayou and one in Sugar Land, Fort Bend County). Funds raised from our events help to develop these boathouses for public use. The Houston boathouse will be the first-ever boathouse along the downtown Bayou for non-motor boat craft, as well as serve as a home base for dragon boating in the Southern United States. The boathouses will facilitate a year-round youth education program, breast cancer survivor program, and corporate/community teambuilding program.
